Sideshow Presents New Paintings by Diamond and Schon

Sideshow Gallery is pleased to present new abstract paintings by Cathy Diamond and Micky Schon. This exhibition opens on Saturday, November 1, 2003 and continues through December 1, 2003.

Cathy Diamond’s new series of paintings is based on her view of the Williamsburg Bridge from her loft. Diamond views the bridge as an oddly prehistoric form with its long extension and stream of traffic ending on Delancey Street with a red head of pulsating electricity. In “Advance and Retreat,” the bridge’s closer stanchion expands toward the viewer like a pumped-up metal soldier, while the distant stanchion diminishes like a frail princess. For Diamond, their distortion in space resonates with themes of domination and submission, aggression and retreat.

Micky Schon’s paintings explore the special place Venice occupies in our collective unconscious and imaginations. They provide a literal reflection of the paradox of Venetian adjacency: the artifice of a Murano window, the sinuousness of a liquid street and the detritus of the Doges in a metropolis of weightlessness. Schon's art translates both the literal and the symbolic—combining DNA and protein crystals, papal power and pageantry, Brazilian samba music, architecture and topography—into a visual experience emphasizing color and energy.

Diamond has exhibited work at Gallery Boreas, The Painting Center and Elizabeth Harris Gallery. Schon studied art at Sarah Lawrence College and the Boston Museum School, and has degrees in both art and mathematics. She has exhibited her work in several New York shows, most recently at the Phoenix Gallery in SoHo.
